Ukrainian Barbie | The Shocking Trend
The Ukrainian Barbie made a huge splash on the Internet when we first met her.
A woman-turned-doll, Valeria Lukyanova rose to fame for her uncanny resemblance to the Mattel doll.
But now we have a bunch of figurine-wannabes. Which brings the question:
WTF is this Ukrainian Barbie thing?
Who Was The OG Barbie
Valeria Lukyanova, an Odessa native, was the first human doll that we know of. The twenty-something took the world took the world by storm with her Barbie-like looks.
How did she achieve it? Plastic surgery.
The story gained so much momentum that it even got to the President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. At the time, Dr Malcolm Roth said:
If she is real and does not use photoshop on her photos, she likely underwent a barrage plastic surgery.
What does Valeria have to say about this?
- She does not Photoshop her social media pictures.
- The only thing she had done was her breasts (which, khm, could never pass as natural)
The Ukrainian Barbie Hates Her Nickname?
During a Skype interview with Cosmopolitan magazine, Valeria made some surprising revelations. Apparently, not only was her plastic look ‘completely natural’, she never even wanted to be a human doll in the first place.
I think it’s even a little degrading and insulting, but I’m used to it now, since that’s what my work demands and this is precisely the image most fans request. So I have to comply with it because it’s become part of my aesthetic image, but I don’t like it.
Degrading or not, it remains as her most characteristic feature.
How Did She Achieve Her Look?
Valeria herself denies any plastic surgeries apart from breast implants. She insisted her pics are not edited… And then she has gone on that some of them are? I don’t know, she contradicts herself a lot. Apparently, the latest version is that they were touched up but ‘mostly colour correction’.
Realistically, Valeria probably had a lot more procedures. Her before pictures suggest:
- Ribs taken out for a slimmer waist
- Surgically reduced jaw
- Nose job
- Dermal fillers
Of course, these are only alleged procedures. Valeria herself says that her ‘before’ pics on the Internet have been digitally altered.
Whether she’s saying the truth or not, you have to admit her Ukrainian Barbie look is highly unnatural. It is what made her famous, got her that Vice documentary, and the hundreds of thousands of Instagram followers in the first place.
Finally, that doll-like look ended up inspiring many others to pursue a plastic look. It was Valeria who started the trend, whether she finds it degrading or not.
Where Is The Ukrainian Barbie Now?
I can tell you where she is not:
In a small town, having children and enjoying family life.
While this is what most Ukraine girls want, Valeria is taking a different path:
The very idea of having children brings out this deep revulsion in me. I’d rather die from torture because the worst thing in the world is to have a family lifestyle.
Valeria is in a steady relationship, having married a childhood friend. These days, her Instagram and social media presence are all about her spiritual teachings.
For a brief period, Valeria even attempted to go ‘breatharian’, living on air and light alone!
Fortunately, that did not last. We will see what the OG Ukrainian Barbie comes up with in the future.
But she is far from the only human doll in the world. Lukyanova has inspired several other girls to follow in her footsteps. Weirdly enough, a lot of them come from Eastern Europe.
Check out Valeria Lukyanova’s successor, Alina Kovalevskaya.
The New Odessa Human Barbie
Meet Alina. Just like Valeria, she comes from Odessa, she has naturally blonde hair and fair complexion and aims to look like the mythical Mattel doll.
Who Is Alina?
Alina Kovalevskaya first started when she was 18, never having gone under the knife. She wasn’t trying to get Barbie’s unrealistic proportions. Instead, she only focused on her facial features:
‘I look like a doll,’ Alina says ‘I like big eyes, little nose, small plump lips. I love long hair. My hair is a meter long.’
At the time, Alina was a full-time student of psychology and social work. She also started a YouTube channel, which currently has 19K followers. And Alina hasn’t even uploaded a new video in 3 years!
The Gamer Barbie
Alina’s own YouTube channel gives us some info about her interests. She says she loves horror movies, enjoys American culture, and she’d love to move to America one day.
The channel also features videos of her playing video games and doing various DIY’s. Well, that is along with a healthy dose of makeup videos, of course. She has tutorials to help other aspiring dolls – Barbie doll transformation makeup, long hair secrets, and even teeth bleaching at home.
The Clash Of Ukrainian Barbies
Alina and her ‘predecessor’ Valeria Lukyanova certainly have a few things in common. They might sound like the perfect friend match but that’s not the case.
Here is how Alina described her feud with the OG Ukrainian Barbie:
I have had certain misunderstandings with her after which we ceased to communicate.
She went on to say that Valeria was a drastically different person than her. Apparently, Alina didn’t even want to be friends.
The Ukrainian Barbie Takes Over The World
The Ukrainian Barbie trend is no longer constricted to Ukraine. Here are some notable international Barbies!
Angelica Kenova: Raised As Barbie
This Moscow native had one of the weirdest upbringings I’ve heard of. From a very young age, her parents always styled her as Barbie. They would only to refer to Angelica as ‘princess’ and completely sheltered her from the outside world.
Angelica wasn’t allowed to go out, date, move away from her parents, or even make choices about her own appearance!
Her mom would buy her collectable Barbie dolls and dress her as one. This would have been fine, if it had only gone on for a few years. Unfortunately, Angelica is now in her late 20s and she’s still just as dependent on her parents:
My mother and father don’t want me to move out of the family home. I’m not even allowed to buy clothes without my mum there – she likes to choose attire that clings to my figure and emphasize my good features.
When Angelica was a teen, her parents hired a personal trainer to make a programme for her. She’s never had plastic surgery to keep up her unhuman proportions. Training and a strict diet are all there is to it, Angelica says.
Dakota Rose: The Asian Barbie
Chicago-born and Florida-raised, Dakota doesn’t have the same background as other human Barbies. Nevertheless, she made a name for herself as a prominent Asian living doll. Her YouTube tutorials went viral in Japan and South Korea. Soon, Dakota was appearing on Asian TV shows and ads.
She relocated to Japan to work as a model. Her recent social media posts have been a lot more natural. Sadly, in 2018 Dakota announced that she had suffered an acute leukaemia episode when she was 20. This is what her frail, pale, doll-like appearance was from.
Ukrainian Barbie: Why Though?
Did you know that if Barbie were real, she wouldn’t be able to walk? Her 16-inch waist would only allow for half a liver and maybe some intestines. Even lifting her head would be impossible!
So it bears asking, why would you want to be like that?
With more extreme Barbie lookalikes, it’s obvious that they are imitating her proportions, too. I think Angelica Kenova’s story is particularly disturbing, with her parents forcing the look on her. But how come most human Barbies come from Eastern Europe?
The Ukrainian Standard Of Beauty
Ukraine is a tough place to find a partner.
The female-to-male ratio works against Ukrainian women. Issues like alcoholism and domestic abuse are rampant. And, to top it all of, they are conservative people who expect you to get married young.
Dating in Ukraine is a competitive sport, which is why Ukrainian dating sites are so overrun.
For women, this means putting tons of effort into their look. Anyone that has been to Kiev can attest that natural beauty is not a thing.
Whether a girl can afford plastic surgery or not, Ukrainian women spend big on their looks. It’s also true that they’re naturally very pretty – with slender figures, a bright complexion, and delicate features.
The Ukrainian Barbie trend is nothing more than taking that high maintenance look to the extreme.
How Do I Get My Own Ukrainian Barbie?
If you’re interested in dating a human doll, here is how Alina Kovalevskaya describes her perfect match:
For me, it is most important that my boyfriend is intelligent, charismatic, purposeful, and kind. In the future, I wish I could have my own house, surrounded by nature.
Turns out, Ukrainian dolls want the same as any other Ukraine woman – a good man and a steady relationship.
Would you date one of these girls?
