The Cost of Going on a Date in Ukraine (2020)
With an extremely strong US dollar in comparison to the Ukrainian hryvnia, the cost of going on a date in Ukraine has never been cheaper.
You can easily take a girl on a date to a good venue here, and spend less than $15-20 for two meals, a couple rounds of drinks, and maybe even some shisha (hookah) if you like.
Don’t believe me? I wouldn’t blame you 😉
Updated 2020: As this original post was written in 2016, it is very obviously not very accurate anymore. The original content is still in here, and clearly marked. This way, you can see the before and after, and you can see how much Ukraine is growing (both as a country and in the prices themselves…). Example of the Cost of Going on a Date in Ukraine – 2016 Edition
I took a Ukrainian girl to this very cafe. It was a small, quiet, and cozy place tucked away in the Arena City area of Kiev, Ukraine. The best way to describe it is that it was like being in somebody’s living room.
(2020 Update: It’s now closed)
This little living room restaurant sold house made wine, as well as a variety of very interesting dishes. Keep in mind that if you do choose to go to this place, the menu is only in Ukrainian. So, best to bring along a cute date to help you out.
The cost of the wine was about $1 USD per glass. It was delicious, and made us both a bit goofy. We took to calling it “Happy Juice”.
I also got some barbecued ribs in a blueberry glaze–they were very interesting. The cost of these was about…$4.
4 glasses of wine: $4
Her meal: $3
Total cost: $11
Now, really really think about that.
The cost of going on a date in Ukraine at a high end restaurant that goes out of it’s way to give you a family-esque experience, and the total cost of it was barely over $10 USD.
It would probably cost ten times that to have a similar quality of meal and experience akin to what I experienced in Kiev in the United States. Especially if you were in a large, metropolitan capital like Kiev. I don’t even want to think about the cost of something like that in New York, Miami, or Los Angeles.

Example of the Cost of Going on a Date in Ukraine – 2020 Edition
You definitely see more and more chain restaurants opening up in Ukraine, while smaller ones like the one in 2016 are being phased out. I don’t mean chain restaurants in the American way — McDonald’s is really the only one that’s here, still no Starbucks. But chain restaurants are becoming more and more normal, which means the standards and the “homeiness” of them drops off.
Anyways, in 2020, you can pretty much expect to pay double what you see above.
Let’s take the restaurant Musafir, for example, one of the best Crimean restaurants in the city. They were open in Crimea until 2014, when they were pressured to close by the government after the 2014 revolution. They’re a small chain of two restaurants, and it definitely feels like you are literally eating in Grandma’s kitchen.
They have a house wine.
The cost? 160 UAH for half a liter. That’s 4 small glasses of wine for $6.
Their cheapest meat dish is $4 (chicken shashlik).
They have more expensive steaks that run up to $10.
Most of the appetizers are $2-$4.
This is one of the absolute cheapest places, especially considering the quality of food and the overall atmosphere. Finding these prices, with the level of service they provide, and the quality of the dishes…it’s really, really hard to find things that cheap in 2020. The cost of going on a date in Ukraine has definitely gone up. In the majority of Georgian restaurants in Kiev, most of which are still insanely affordable, the prices of everything you see above is 30% (or more) higher.
That’s just the nature of the beast, with the world becoming more global and accessible, and more and more people coming to Ukraine.
